A Beautiful Indian Fusion Wedding at St Alban's Church & Hanbury Barns | Derby Wedding Photographer

Back in the summer of 2022, I had the pleasure of second shooting alongside my lovely friend Debbie from Stott Weddings to capture one of the most memorable weddings I've ever photographed. It was my first Indian fusion wedding, bringing together two faiths, two traditions and two beautiful celebrations, all centred around one couple and the people who love them.

The day began at St Alban's RC Church in Chaddesden, Derby, where Maria and Paresh celebrated a traditional Catholic wedding ceremony with family and friends. It was a heartfelt service filled with emotion, laughter and the excitement that comes with finally saying "I do."

After congratulations and confetti outside the church, everyone made their way to Hanbury Barns, just outside Burton upon Trent, where the celebrations continued with a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony.

As someone who loves documentary wedding photography, this was such a fascinating experience to photograph. It wasn't simply two ceremonies on the same day, it was two families, two cultures and two traditions coming together with so much warmth, respect and love.

One of my favourite moments was seeing Paresh make his entrance on horseback, a joyful tradition known as the Baraat. Surrounded by family and friends, there was such a wonderful atmosphere of celebration before the ceremony had even begun.

The Hindu ceremony itself was unlike anything I had photographed before. While every wedding is unique, I loved how many of the traditions focused on family, commitment and supporting one another throughout married life. It was colourful, meaningful and full of symbolism, with loved ones playing an important role throughout the ceremony.

Maria and Paresh also changed into traditional attire for each ceremony, and it was wonderful to see them honour both of their backgrounds. Maria looked absolutely stunning in both dresses, each perfectly suited to the traditions they were celebrating, while Paresh looked equally impressive in his traditional outfits.

Hanbury Barns provided the perfect setting for the afternoon celebrations. Its beautiful rural location, rustic character and relaxed atmosphere made it an ideal backdrop for such a vibrant occasion, and being so close to home made it even more special for me to photograph.

Although the customs were different from many weddings I regularly photograph, the emotions were exactly the same. Proud parents, happy tears, huge smiles, laughter between friends and those quiet moments shared between the couple are universal, no matter the culture or tradition.

That's one of the reasons I love wedding photography so much. Every wedding has its own story, its own traditions and its own personalities, but at the heart of every celebration is the same thing—two people choosing to spend their lives together, surrounded by those who matter most.

Looking back, this wedding remains one of my favourites because it beautifully celebrated both Maria's Catholic faith and Paresh's Hindu heritage. Watching both cultures honoured with such love and respect was genuinely a privilege to witness.
