Fun Wedding at the Holiday Inn, Newport Pagnell, Milton Keynes
A fabulously fun, laid back wedding for a couple who definitely did things their own way
Some weddings are beautifully traditional. Others are a little bit different, a lot more relaxed and completely full of personality.
Su and Liam’s wedding was definitely the latter.
When I photographed Su and Liam’s engagement shoot earlier in the summer, we had such a laugh that I already knew their wedding day was going to be good fun. They are one of those couples who are just incredibly easy to be around. Down to earth, relaxed and completely themselves.
So when their wedding day arrived, Rob and I headed down the M1 towards Milton Keynes and the Holiday Inn Express at Junction 14, Newport Pagnell, ready for a day of fun.
And there was a lovely little coincidence waiting for us when we arrived.
It's a small world...
Rob was photographing Liam and the boys getting ready while I stayed with Su and the girls.
As it turned out, Rob had actually worked with Su when he lived in Milton Keynes.
What are the chances of that?
Your second photographer turns up for your wedding and it turns out he already knows the bride!
It really did set the tone for the day. Everything felt incredibly relaxed and familiar, with plenty of laughter from the moment we arrived.
And while the girls were busy getting ready in the suite, the boys were taking a rather more leisurely approach to the morning.
They had time to play FIFA on the PlayStation before heading down to the venue.
I honestly don't think I've ever seen the girls have quite that much spare time on a wedding morning!
Hair and make up take time, don't they ladies?
A rock chick in a big dress
Su looked absolutely amazing.
She may be a rock chick at heart but she looked every inch the bride in her beautiful big wedding dress. And I loved that the rest of the day still felt completely like Su and Liam.
They are both really into their rock music, gaming and Game of Thrones, and those little details were woven into their wedding in a way that felt personal rather than staged.
Su had even made all of the table decorations herself.
That is something I love about weddings. It doesn't have to be about having the biggest budget or following every wedding trend. Sometimes the details that mean the most are the ones you've made yourself or chosen because they say something about you as a couple.
And that's exactly what this wedding did.
It felt like them.
A wedding full of laughter
Su and Liam wanted their wedding photography to be fun, relaxed and informal.
They weren't looking for hours of stiff posing or a photographer taking over the day.
And honestly, that suited me perfectly.
My approach to wedding photography has always been about allowing you to enjoy your wedding while I photograph what's actually happening around you. The laughter, the ridiculous moments, the little glances, the people you love and all those things that you probably won't even notice happening on the day.
Of course, we took some time for photographs of Su and Liam together but it was all kept relaxed and natural.
Because you don't need to spend hours away from your guests to get beautiful photographs of the two of you.
You just need a little bit of time, somewhere nice to wander and a photographer who understands that the photographs should still feel like you.
For the couples who don't quite fit the traditional wedding mould
Looking back at Su and Liam's wedding now, I'm reminded just how much I love photographing couples who aren't necessarily looking for a traditional wedding experience.
Maybe you're a bit alternative.
Maybe you're a complete rock music fan.
Maybe your idea of a perfect evening involves gaming rather than dancing.
Maybe you're obsessed with Game of Thrones.
Or maybe you simply want a wedding that feels like your wedding, rather than something you've copied from Pinterest because that's what you're supposed to do.
That's absolutely fine with me.
In fact, I love it.
Your wedding doesn't have to look like everyone else's. And your wedding photography doesn't have to either.
If you're looking for relaxed, documentary style wedding photography where you can actually enjoy your day and let your personalities come through, I'd love to hear from you.
And in the meantime, take a look through this wonderfully fun day and you'll see exactly why Su and Liam's wedding was such a fabulous one to be part of.

Planning a wedding that's a little bit different?
If you're planning a wedding that feels a little less traditional, I'd love to hear about it.
Whether you're a rock chick, a gaming couple, a lover of all things fantasy, or you simply want a wedding day that feels completely and utterly you, that's the kind of wedding I love photographing.
You don't need to spend hours standing in front of a camera and you don't need to follow a list of traditional wedding photographs if that's not your thing. I want you to enjoy your day, spend time with the people you love and have photographs that bring all those moments back.
I photograph weddings across Derbyshire, the Midlands and throughout the UK, so wherever you're planning your day, I'd love to hear what you've got planned.
