A Joyful July Wedding at The Mill Barns, Alveley – Celebrating Love and New Beginnings
There is something lovely about a summer wedding at Mill Barns. The countryside is looking its best, the gardens are full of life and there is so much opportunity to step outside for photographs without taking the couple away from their guests for too long.
I photographed Abigail and Ross's beautiful July 2022 wedding at Mill Barns in Alveley, Shropshire, and this was a particularly special celebration because they had another piece of wonderful news to share with their family and friends.
They were expecting a baby.
So this wasn't just a wedding celebrating two people getting married. It was also the beginning of a very exciting new chapter for them.
A summer wedding at Mill Barns
Mill Barns is a beautiful exclusive use wedding venue in Alveley, Shropshire, surrounded by countryside and water.
One of the things that makes arriving at the venue so memorable is the bridge leading towards the main entrance. With the water surrounding the building, it almost feels as though the venue is floating, making a lovely first impression for couples and their guests.
The gardens also provide plenty of opportunities for photographs throughout the day, from relaxed portraits of the newly married couple to all those little moments happening between the formal parts of the wedding.
For Abigail and Ross, the July sunshine gave us a beautiful backdrop for their day.
Abigail and Ross's wedding day
Abigail looked incredible in her champagne lace layered wedding dress and was absolutely glowing throughout the day. Ross and the other gents looked equally smart in blue-grey tweed suits, which worked beautifully with the summer setting.
But, as always, it wasn't really the outfits or the venue that made this wedding memorable.
It was the people.
There was so much happiness surrounding Abigail and Ross as they finally said "I do" and celebrated with their family and friends. I spent much of the day looking for those natural moments between the bigger parts of the wedding, from smiles and laughter to the hugs and reactions of the people who had come to celebrate with them.
That's what I love about photographing weddings. The big moments matter, but so do the little ones happening around them.
A very special gender reveal
The evening brought an extra surprise for everyone.
Abigail and Ross had planned a gender reveal involving their much-loved dog. Their four-legged family member appeared wearing something blue, revealing to their guests that they were expecting a baby boy.
It was such a lovely and personal way to share their news and, as you can imagine, Abigail's reaction was priceless.
It's moments like this that remind me why I love photographing weddings in a natural and unobtrusive way. You can't manufacture a reaction like that. You simply need to be there, paying attention and ready to capture it when it happens.
A wedding can be about so much more than the ceremony itself. It's about the people you love, the things that matter to you and the stories that make your day completely personal.
Wedding photography at Mill Barns
Having photographed several weddings at Mill Barns, including this wedding as the primary photographer, I know the venue well and understand how to make the most of the different spaces throughout the day.
But I'm not interested in making every Mill Barns wedding look the same.
Your wedding should look and feel like yours.
I'll give you some gentle direction when you need it, particularly for your couple portraits, but much of the day is about stepping back and allowing things to happen naturally.
The laughter, the nerves, the happy tears, the hugs, the people you haven't seen for years and the completely unexpected moments are often the photographs you'll treasure most.
For me, it's always less posing and more feeling.
Abigail and Ross's July wedding was a beautiful celebration of their marriage, their family and the exciting new chapter that was already beginning. And having their gorgeous dog play such an important part in revealing their baby boy made the day even more memorable.
If you're planning your own Mill Barns wedding, I'd love to tell the story of your day in the same relaxed and natural way.
