A Beautiful Outdoor Wedding at Longstowe Hall with a Relaxed Documentary Style
There are some venues that simply take your breath away and Longstowe Hall is absolutely one of them.
When Ryan asked me to join him as a second photographer for this wedding, it was an easy yes. Not just because of the venue, but because these are the kinds of weddings that suit my approach perfectly. Relaxed, meaningful, and full of genuine moments.
Although I often work as a second photographer, the way I document a wedding remains the same. My style is rooted in storytelling. Observing quietly, anticipating moments, and allowing the day to unfold naturally. Even when I am positioned at the back or to the side, I am always looking for those honest, fleeting interactions that truly tell the story of the day.
Groom Preparations
The morning began with the groom and his closest friends at a lodge just a short distance from the venue. The atmosphere was calm, easygoing, and full of laughter.
Nothing was forced or overly directed. Aside from a quick group photograph, everything was captured exactly as it happened. These are often some of my favourite moments of the day. The anticipation, the friendships, the quiet excitement before everything begins.
An Outdoor Ceremony by the Lake
The ceremony took place outdoors beside the lake, and it could not have been more beautiful. With the sun shining and the setting so peaceful, it created the most perfect backdrop. I have always loved celebrant led weddings for their relaxed and personal feel, and this one was no exception.
Sarah looked incredible as she made her entrance, and the flower girls added such a lovely, light hearted touch to the ceremony. It felt intimate, heartfelt, and completely true to them.
Champagne, Candids and Meaningful Moments
Following the ceremony, guests gathered for champagne and canapés on the lawn.
This is where documentary photography really comes into its own. Natural conversations, laughter, embraces, and all those in between moments that often go unnoticed. Alongside this, we made time for family photographs, something that becomes more meaningful with every passing year.
While these portraits are a traditional part of the day, they hold real value. They are the images that will be looked back on by future generations, connecting people and memories across time.
Couple Portraits in the Grounds
We took a short walk with the couple for a few relaxed portraits around the grounds. There is no pressure, no awkward posing. Just gentle guidance when needed, allowing them to be themselves while I quietly document. These moments are always calm, giving the couple a little space to pause and take everything in.
The Reception and Speeches
The reception marquee looked stunning, beautifully styled and filled with soft light.
As the couple made their entrance and took their seats, the energy in the room shifted into celebration. The speeches were a real highlight of the day. Full of warmth, humour, and emotion.
One moment that stood out was the groom singing to his bride on the ukulele. Completely unexpected and incredibly touching. There were tears, laughter, and a real sense of connection across the room.
Golden Light and a Quiet First Dance
Later in the day, we stepped outside once more to make the most of the softer evening light. The woodland areas surrounding Longstowe Hall created the most beautiful setting for a few final portraits.
With Covid restrictions still in place at the time, the evening celebrations were quieter, with just a first dance shared between the couple. Even so, it felt incredibly special. Intimate, meaningful, and entirely focused on them.
A Final Thought
This wedding was a perfect reminder that it is not about how much happens during the day, but how it feels.
From the relaxed morning preparations to the lakeside ceremony and heartfelt speeches, every part of the day was filled with genuine connection. It was an absolute joy to document.
