A Relaxed Wedding at Mill Barns | Shropshire Wedding Photographer

Mill Barns in Alveley is a beautiful setting for a wedding, with its timber framed barns, landscaped gardens and water surrounding the venue. It's a place I've now had the pleasure of photographing several times, and every wedding has given me something different to photograph.

On this occasion, I was working alongside my good friend Sam of Samantha J Photography, with my role being to photograph the groom preparations and document the wedding day from my own perspective.

Groom preparations at Mill Barns

My day began with a few photographs to set the scene before heading into the groom preparations.

I've mentioned it in other Mill Barns posts, but the bridal suite really is something else. It's an incredibly beautiful space, with huge windows, plenty of natural light and views across the private surroundings.

It's one of those rooms where you could quite happily spend an entire morning photographing the details and preparations.

From there, it was time to head through to the main barn for the ceremony.

A different perspective on the ceremony

As a second photographer, one of the things I enjoy most is finding a different viewpoint from the main photographer.

At Mill Barns, the balcony at the back of the ceremony room gives you a fantastic alternative perspective without needing to be in the middle of everything. It's somewhere I used carefully throughout the ceremony, allowing me to photograph moments from above and capture the atmosphere without becoming a distraction.

The confetti photograph from the balcony is still one of my favourites from this wedding.

Once the ceremony was over, I went back to doing what I naturally gravitate towards, photographing the people.

Guests arriving, catching up with one another, laughing, chatting and enjoying being together are often the photographs that bring a wedding gallery to life. They might not be the photographs couples initially imagine when they think about their wedding photography, but years later those photographs can become incredibly important.

Photographing the moments in between

I love observing people at weddings.

Not in a strange lurking-in-the-corner kind of way! It's about being aware of what's happening around me and being ready when something genuine happens.

A smile between friends, an emotional reaction, someone laughing at a story or two people catching up after not seeing each other for years. These are the moments that happen naturally when everyone is relaxed and enjoying the day.

And although I love a good wedding party and I'm certainly not afraid to get involved when the dance floor gets going, I don't think a wedding has to be photographed from beginning to end to tell its story.

Sometimes the smaller moments are just as important.

My role on this particular wedding finished shortly after the speeches, which is fairly typical when working as a second photographer. My job was to add another perspective to the day and make sure the groom preparations, ceremony and guest interactions were all covered from a different viewpoint.

Since this wedding, I've returned to Mill Barns and photographed weddings there as the primary photographer too. So that little line in my original post about hoping to photograph a wedding there one day has thankfully become a reality!

It's now a venue I know well, but I still approach every wedding there as its own story. The venue provides the setting but it's the people, relationships and moments happening throughout the day that make the photographs personal.

Whether you're planning a wedding at Mill Barns, another Shropshire venue or somewhere completely different, my approach is relaxed and unobtrusive. I'll give you some gentle direction when you need it, particularly for your couple portraits, but I'm not going to turn your wedding day into one long photoshoot.

I'm there to capture the things you will actually want to remember.
