Set in the rolling countryside on the edge of the Peak District, The Ashes Barn is one of those venues that feels effortlessly special the moment you arrive.

With its tree-lined driveway, historic stone bridge and beautifully restored barns, it’s easy to see why it’s such a sought-after wedding venue in Staffordshire. The setting is peaceful, romantic, and perfect for couples wanting a relaxed yet elegant countryside wedding.

Hayley and Dan’s day was exactly that.

Dan looked incredibly smart in traditional tails, while Hayley was simply exquisite in a fitted gown paired with bold red lips—timeless with a modern edge. Together, they brought a real sense of understated elegance to the day.

A Beautiful Countryside Barn Wedding

It had been many years since my last visit to The Ashes, and it was lovely to see how the venue has evolved. While the ceremony and dining barns remain as beautiful as ever, there are now even more thoughtfully designed spaces.

The Old Dairy has been transformed into a stylish space for the couple, alongside a separate preparation area for the bride and her wedding party. The former owners’ house is now stunning on-site accommodation, allowing guests to fully relax and enjoy the celebration.

It’s these kinds of details that make The Ashes such a versatile and well-considered wedding venue.

A Natural, Storytelling Approach

I joined the day from groom preparations through to the speeches, capturing the natural flow of the day alongside Deb.

I started the day capturing groom preparations at a nearby cottage and stayed through to the speeches. Even in that shorter coverage, there was so much to document—from the quiet anticipation in the morning to the energy and laughter later in the day.

Working with Deb is always a joy, we know how each other works, and there’s a natural flow to the way we document a wedding together. It’s relaxed, collaborative, and always full of laughter.

If you’re planning a wedding and considering a second photographer, there’s a good chance it may be the two of us working together.

Photographing Weddings at The Ashes Barn

The Ashes is undeniably beautiful in every season but it also offers an interesting challenge from a photography perspective particularly inside the barns, where the lighting can be quite atmospheric and directional.

For me, that’s all part of the storytelling.

Rather than overpowering the space, I work with the natural light to preserve the mood and authenticity of the day capturing moments as they unfold in a way that feels honest, timeless and true to the setting.
